Bala Devi’s goal for Rangers FC is a historic moment for Indian sport1 min readReading Time: < 1 minute
Bala Devi, the iconic football player from Manipur, recently scored her first goal for Rangers FC, a Scottish professional football club. It was a historic moment for Indian football, making her the first woman football player to sign with a European Club and score a goal. The Rangers won that match 9-0 against Motherwell, another European football club.
Bala Devi started playing football for India in 2005, when she was only 15 years. Her inspiration was Mary Kom, the Manipuri boxer, and Olympic medalist. Bala’s father used to play football as a hobby and introduced her to the game. She would beat the local boys at football and grew in the sport quickly.
She has represented three different clubs in India before Rangers FC signed her up earlier this year. Her accomplishments even earned her a job with the Manipur Police in 2010.
