The COVID-19 pandemic has turned our lives upside down. Lockdowns, school closures and physical distancing are all having a big impact on children.

UNICEF India asked children from across the Country to document their lives at home.

Stay Home Diaries is a vlog series produced by children to express how they are coping and share the daily fun things they are doing, to also inspire others.

From the tea gardens of Assam to the urban slums of Chennai, these video diaries show the unique ways children are coping with the impact of COVID-19.

Assam

When lockdown began, 15-year-old Rimika from a tea garden community in Assam sometimes felt worried about coronavirus. But, she quickly filled her days with some fun activities.

Chennai

Althaf, 17, is an aspiring film maker. He was confined to his home’s four walls as the slum where he lives in Chennai was declared a containment zone. He shares his day in lockdown, which hasn’t stopped his storytelling.

Mumbai

Dancing, baking and playing the piano have been the highlights of four-year-old Ahaan’s lockdown days at home in Mumbai.

Chennai

Lockdowns, school closures, the uncertainty of board exams due to coronavirus had a big impact on 15-year old Subhitha from Chennai.

Odisha

Hemashri, 15, lives in a rural village in Odisha. She comes from a large family and her mother is an Anganwadi (community health) worker. Apart from her studies, Hemashri has also been helping her siblings in their studies and helping with the household chores. A young leader, she ensured that her family adopted appropriate behaviors during the lockdown.

Bihar

Lockdown gave 17-year-old Aditya more time to pursue his hobbies. He could brush up his art skills and learn new aspects of painting.

Odisha

Jinita, 15, from Odisha enjoys playing with her siblings at home. She also reads a lot. She urges everyone in her community to stay safe and follow appropriate behaviors to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and stay safe.

Message from UNICEF: Thank you to all the children who shared their Stay Home Diaries

Children enjoyed the experience of documenting their daily life amidst the lockdown and the process of sharing their daily activities. The Diaries gave them a chance to share in their own words and made them feel connected to one another.

The children featured shot and directed the videos themselves and the UNICEF India team helped guide their technical skills as content creators.

UNICEF is on the ground across India, partnering with government, health workers and other front-line responders to keep children healthy, safe and learning, no matter who they are or where they live.
