Healthy Ways to Keep Your Parents Distracted3 min read

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Lockdown can often make you feel bored and lonely, sometimes even sad. You can’t play outdoors with your friends, and you only have your parents for company. Now parents are great, but more often than not, they aren’t exactly the best people to play or relax with. You may have just sat down to watch some good TV or eat that ice-cream you’ve been dreaming about, but lo and behold, your parents appear. “Didn’t you have homework?” they ask. “Don’t you have to clean your room?” “You can’t watch more TV, it’s bad for you!” Ughhh… if only there was a way to distract them for ONE MINUTE so you could have a second to think.

Well, there is one way to trick your parents into forgetting about your endless homework and chores. Board Games! See, board games are not only super fun and engaging for children, but they are also just as fun and addictive for adults. Not only that, they’re a fun way for you to sharpen your brain, boost your immunity, and even boost your mood without you realizing it.

So, here’s a list of 5 board games that Owliver thinks will keep you happy and healthy:

Chess

Chess is a board game for two players. Each player begins with an army of pieces and has to think really hard on how to destroy their enemy’s army while also following the rules of the game. Chess is definitely a challenging game, but once you learn the rules, you won’t be able to draw yourself away from the chessboard.

Fun Fact: Chess, one of the oldest games in the world, was invented in India!

Jenga

Jenga is far simpler than chess, and the rules are easy to master. But….it requires a steady hand and extreme patience. The aim of Jenga is to build the tallest tower that you possibly can-the only issue is that you have only 54 blocks with which to do it. There are, of course, several rules that you have to follow, but working within those rules is what makes the game even more exciting!

Fun Fact: The record for the highest known JENGA® tower is 40 complete stories with two blocks into the 41st, claimed in 1985 by Robert Grebler (US). The makers of Jenga are actively seeking a new world solo height champion.

Scrabble

Are you fond of words and puzzles? If yes, scrabble is the game for you. The aim of the game is simple: you have to make the longest, best, and most words you possibly can. You can build all kinds of Words! Depending on where on the board you place your letters, you can win bonus points or face penalties. You have to also watch out for your opponents and prevent them from making a word that’s too good!

Twister

Now here is a game that is just pure fun. You have to twist your body into odd shapes while sharing a mat with other people who are doing the exact same thing! There’s so much screaming and laughing that no one could think of homework during a twister session.

Pictionary

This one is for all the artists in the house. Pictionary is a super duper fun game. You have to pick a card and draw whatever it tells you to. You’d better be quick because the timer is ticking! Meanwhile, your teammates have to try their best to guess what you are attempting to draw.

Alright then, go have some fun and don’t forget to count your Jenga tower blocks!
