Jadeja carries CSK to victory
By his own admission, Ravindra Jadeja had his best IPL game, when Chennai Super Kings convincingly beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 70 runs.
The all-round smashed a 28-ball 62, which included 37 runs off the final over of the innings, picked up a 3-fer and effected a stellar run out. Courtesy of that win, CSK now top the table with Delhi taking second spot and RCB at third.
Delhi wins over Hyderabad
The encounter between Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad produced the first super over of the tournament. The Capitals edged past the Sunrisers with a successful chase of 8 runs in the super over. Interestingly, both teams opted for spin with Axar Patel and Rashid Khan bowling the respective super overs for Delhi and Hyderabad respectively.
At the end of the second week, three teams – CSK, DC & RCB – top the table with 8 points each. MI, PBKS & RR have two wins each while SRH & KKR are two teams with just one win from their first five games.
Pakistan Claim T20 Series Triumph Against Zimbabwe
Hosts Zimbabwe levelled the three-match series with a stunning win in the second game. However, Pakistan came back strongly to claim the series with a 24-run victory in the final match.
Pakistan 165/3 (Rizwan 91*, Babar 52, Jongwe 3-37) beat Zimbabwe 141/7 (Madhevere 59, Marumani 35, Hasan 4-18, Rauf 2-34) by 24 runs
Mohammad Rizwan, with an unbeaten knock of 91 and Hasan Ali, who took four wickets, were the architects of the win.
European Super League Dropped
Following massive backlash from fans, pundits and the FA, English clubs Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham all abandoned the plan of joining the European Super League.
The Premier League had threatened to sanction the six rebel clubs and England Prime Minister Boris Johnson considered introducing laws to stop them forming a new European competition he referred to as a “cartel.”
Man City win League Cup
Manchester City claimed a record-equaling fourth successive League Cup triumph as Aymeric Laporte’s late header sealed a deserved 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The final played at Wembley was special as each club was allocated 2,000 tickets for fans with the rest distributed to local residents and National Health Service workers.
Manchester City has now matched Liverpool’s record of eight League Cup titles.
Spotify Tries to Get the Gunners
Spotify founder and Swedish businessman Daniel Ek, worth a reported 4.7 billion US dollars (£3.38bn) had tweeted this past week: “As a kid growing up, I’ve cheered for Arsenal as long as I can remember. If KSE would like to sell Arsenal I’d be happy to throw my hat in the ring.”
Reports suggest that Arsenal legends Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira too have joined the billionaire Ek’s bid to buy the club. However, Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke has no intention to sell.
Kroenke’s son, Josh, stated that his family have no intention of selling and promised to engage with fans in future.
Tight Title race in France
With 4 games to go, Ligue 1’s top 3 – Lille, PSG & Monaco are separated by 2 points. During the weekend, Lille came back from two goals down to beat Lyon and go top of Ligue 1.
Burak Yilmaz scored twice, including a superb lob to seal the win.
La Liga Title Race Heats Up
Atletico Madrid , Real Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla separated by just three points with just five games to go in the season.
While Antoine Griezmann fired the Catalans to a second consecutive victory to take them to 71 points, level with second-placed Real Madrid, they have a game in hand on their rivals at the top of the table. Real Madrid dropped points against Real Betis and Atletico Madrid lost to Basque club Athletic Bilbao.
Biggest crowd for a Sports Event Since the Pandemic at the MCG!
Around 78,000 Australian Rules football fans watched an Australian Football League match between Collingwood and Essendon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. This was the biggest crowd for a sports event since the pandemic began.
Previously, a T20I match between India and Australia in March had recorded an attendance of 67,000.
Stephen Curry Sets 3-Pointers Record
Stephen Curry broke James Harden’s NBA record for the most three-pointers made in a month, as Golden State Warriors beat the Sacramento Kings 117-113.
Curry, who finished with 37 points, hit seven three-pointers to take his tally to 85 with two games to play in April.
The previous record was 82, set by Harden while playing for the Houston Rockets in November 2019. Curry made it his 30th 30-point game of the season and has hit at least that target in 13 of his past 14 games.
KD Returns to Help Brooklyn Beat Phoenix
After missing three games because of a thigh injury, Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant returned in style as he scored 33 points in 28 minutes to propel his team to a 128-119 victory over the visiting Phoenix Suns.
