The Big 2!

A game to remember

Manchester City and Liverpool played out an enthralling 2-2 draw and shared the points. The game would be remembered for the stellar goals, especially Mohammad Salah’s, as the Egyptian dribbled past six opposition defenders and finished with his weaker right foot.

Check out his goal here.

Manchester United had to settle for a draw against Everton. Chelsea eased past Southampton to a 3-1 win and thus climbed to the top of the league table with 16 points. Liverpool (15), Manchester City(14) and Manchester United(14) make the top four at the end of Gameweek 7.

Indian women’s team put up a commendable performance against Australia in their maiden Day/Night Test, which ended in a draw due to inclement weather during the first two days. Smriti Mandhana struck a memorable hundred which set up India for a big first-innings total.

In the final innings, with 35 overs to go, India set Australia an improbable target of 272. The hosts got to 36 for 2 in 15 overs before both captains agreed to settle for a draw.

The teams eventually took home two points each, the lead 6-4 in Australia’s favour heading into the three-match T20I leg after the hosts won the ODI series 2-1.

Champions League

A little known Moldovian club Sheriff arguably provided the biggest upset this competition has ever seen. The debutants beat 13-time champion Real Madrid, away from home, at the Bernabeu, 2-1 to lead the group with back-to-back wins.

Sebastian Thill smashed a stunning 89th-minute winner to complete a memorable victory.

Madrid fell behind to Jasurbek Yakhshiboev’s header in the first half, but Karim Benzema’s penalty appeared to have salvaged a point for the Spanish giant, only for Thill to snatch an incredible victory.

Lionel Messi scored his first goal for Paris when PSG beat Manchester City 2-0 in their group game. Idrissa Gueye scored the opener before Messi’s sensational second-half strike.

Cristiano Ronaldo once again proved to be Manchester United’s saviour scoring a late winner at home against Villareal. The game was tied at 1-1 going into the final minute of the game before Ronaldo smashed in the winner from a tight angle.

Juventus beat Chelsea 1-0 with winger Federico Chiesa scoring the winner.

Harry Kane scored a hattrick for Tottenham to become the first player to score a hattrick in the Champions League, Europa League and the Conference League as Spurs beat Slovenian club Mura 5-1.

La Liga

Atletico Madrid beat Barcelona 2-0 to be tied at 17 points at the top of the table alongside Real Madrid and Real Sociedad. Thomas Lemar and Luis Suarez were among the goals for the defending champions. This was Barcelona’s second game in a row where they ended up without registering a shot on target, following a 3-0 defeat to Benfica in Europe midweek.

Real Madrid too lost two games this week. After their shock loss to Sheriff, they were stunned 2-1 away at Espanyol in LaLiga.

London Marathon

Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei won the women’s London Marathon in two hours, 17.43 minutes as world record holder and defending champion Brigid Kosgei finished just outside the podium places.

Jepkosgei finished 15 seconds ahead of Ethiopian Degitu Azimeraw, while Ashete Bekere came third

Ethiopia’s Sisay Lemma won the men’s London Marathon in a time of two hours four minutes.

Lemma finished 27 seconds ahead of Kenya’s Vincent Kipchuma with Mosinet Geremew third.
