Screen time is the amount of time spent on a device with a screen such as smartphones, tablets, televisions, or laptops. Whether we like it or not, we all have to agree that digital devices are everywhere. They are helpful In many ways but they can harm us in an equal number of ways. Therefore, it is important to be mindful of their use.
How does screen time affect our sleep?
Screen time is linked to a host of Insomnia (inability to sleep) symptoms in teenagers. It causes them to sleep late and results in less sleep overall and increased next-day sleepiness.
Tip: Stop using electronic devices 30 minutes before bed in order to have a healthy sleep.
How does screen time affect our eyes?
Digital eye strain often leads to dry eyes and puts an extra burden on the muscles that help the eyes to focus. Also, eyes do not blink as frequently when looking at digital devices, which causes faster disruption and evaporation of the film of tears that protects the surface of the eye.
Tip: Keep blinking our eyes frequently while using digital devices.
Some of us can barely put down our electronic devices. Even when we are on a vacation, instead of enjoying it with our eyes, we want to click pictures and post them on social media. Screen time can also take us away from living in the moment. An average adult should ideally spend under 2 hours on the screen everyday. Children should redirect energies away from the screen and towards physical activities. Screen time, though essential for certain tasks, needs to be curtailed. Perhaps we could practise self control. If that seems hard, screen time limits should be set by parents in order to keep track of their child’s activity and time spent on the device.
