This Republic Day, let’s take a minute to recognise the work of some fellow-Indians who are making strides abroad, specifically those who have been recently chosen by US President Joe Biden to be a part of his administration. This time’s presidential election was already a landmark one that set many records, and one such record was the number of American Indians to be part Biden’s team.

American Indians comprise just one per cent of the country’s population, so 20 members making it to top positions is quite a big deal, right? We already know about Kamala Harris, who made history by becoming the first-ever woman of Indian-origin to be sworn-in as Vice-President. So who are these other prominent figures? Let’s take a look at some of them…

Neera Tanden



She is the new Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget. This is an important role, as it looks into the President’s finances!

Dr Vivek Murthy


He has been nominated as the US Surgeon General. He is also part of Biden’s COvid-19 task force, which is a team of experts who are assessing how to best fight the virus.

Vanita Gupta


This civil rights lawyer will be the first woman of colour to serve as the US Associate Attorney General. 

Uzra Zeya


The Indian-American diplomat has been nominated as Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights

Vinay Reddy

This long-time associate of President has been appointed as the Director of Speechwriting. So all the important speeches the President has to make, this man is in charge.

Gautam Raghavan

Raghavan has been appointed Deputy Director in the Office of Presidential Personnel. This role involves handling the staff of the President, which is a LOT of people.

Bharat Ramamurti

Ramamurti has been appointed the Deputy National Economic Council Director for Financial Reform and Consumer Protection.

Mala Adiga


She will be working directly with the President’s wife Jill Biden as her Policy Director


Garima Verma

She has been appointed the Digital Director of the Office of the First Lady Jill Biden.

Tarun Chhabra

Chhabra has a key role in the National Security Council, serving as Senior Director for Technology and National Security 

Sumona Guha



She has been appointed as Senior Director for South Asia at the National Security Council. 


Shanthi Kalathil

 Kalathil has been appointed the Coordinator for Democracy and Human Rights at the National Security Council.

Sonia Aggarwal

She has been nominated as the Adviser for Climate Policy and Innovation in the Office of the Domestic Climate Policy at the White House.


Sabrina Singh


Sabrina Singh has been named Vice President Kamala Harris’s Deputy Press Secretary. 

Aisha Shah


She will the next Partnerships Manager at the White House Office of Digital Strategy.

Sameera Fazili


She has been appointed the key position of Deputy Director at the US National Economic Council in the White House. 

Vedant Patel


He has been given the post of the White House Assistant Press Secretary. This means he will be part of the media team.

Vidur Sharma


Health policy expert Vidur Sharma has been appointed the Testing Adviser on Joe Biden’s Covid-19 Response Team.

Rohit Chopra


Rohit Chopra will be the next director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He earlier played a key role in students’ loans.

She has been appointed to the office of the White House Cousel as Associate Counsel

Reema Shah

Reema Shah has been appointed the Deputy Associate Counsel at the Office of White House Counsel.
