The un-furgettable green puppy from Italy1 min read
Reading Time: < 1 minutePuppies come in all shapes and sizes. You can find them in black, brown, white and even gray, but Pistachio, a puppy born recently in Italy, is green! Pistachio was born in the home of a farmer named Cristian Mallocci. His dog Spelacchia gave birth to five puppies, but only Pistachio was born with green fur.

Pistachio’s four brothers and sisters look just like mom with white fur.
So what makes this puppy so unique?
Dogs born with green fur are extremely rare. Experts believe that this could be the result of the puppy coming in contact with a green pigment called biliverdin while still in its mother’s womb. A pigment is what gives things their colour – it is found in the tissues of animals and plants and is completely insoluble in water.
Pistachio, however, will eventually lose the green colour. In fact, his owner says the colour is already fading. While Mallocci has already given Pistachio’s siblings up for adoption, he decided to keep Pistachio with him for good luck. When the puppy is older, he will help his human in herding sheep.
